School Re-organisation in Nottingham City

The declining birth rate in the City over many years has led to an increase in surplus (unfilled) pupil places in our schools.

In 2000, it was estimated that if the City Council did not address this issue one in three primary school places (almost 7,000) would be empty by 2008.

Falling rolls mean reduced school budgets, making it more difficult for schools to maintain the staffing and resources levels required to deliver the full curriculum.

Primary school reorganisation and the reduction of surplus pupil places contribute to the City Council’s priority of improved educational attainment by maintaining a smaller number of viable primary schools, allowing funding to be more closely aligned to teaching and learning, improving the quality of education for the benefit of all children in the City and contributing to an improvement in the City’s position in the national league tables.
