PDF Sustainable School Travel Strategy – Draft v.1

This strategy has been developed in response to the requirements set out in the Education and Inspections Act 2006 and is designed to build upon and compliment the Council’s Children and Young Peoples Plan and Every Child Matters agenda. The strategy also supports the Council’s five Corporate Plan themes.

The Council recognises that the future of education provision in the City will change significantly over the next 5 years with the continuing programme of Building Schools for the Future, primary school reorganisation, extended schools provision and the 14-19 diploma delivery. All of these changes will put additional and differing demands on the transport infrastructure across the City and this strategy aims to deliver improvements in accessibility and sustainability of travel to schools and other educational establishments and ensure these future travel demands are met.

In support of this aim the Council has brought together key partners, both internal and external to the council, to ensure that the full range of education and transport knowledge and expertise has been able to contribute to the strategy and identify the changing demands of educational provision. We hope that this approach has helped to produce a strategy that is focused on educational needs of the whole school community and has improved access to suitable travel options that are sustainable and environmentally friendly.

The council is planning to consult on this strategy within the coming weeks. Please revisit our website in the future to comment.
