Mandatory & Discretionary Support

Students in higher education normally qualify for a government-funded student loan. But some are also eligible for means-tested grants to cover their tuition fees and help to support their dependents.y responsible for making the actual payments and for writing to students

Application forms (PN1) are sent to schools and colleges in April. They can also be obtained from the Student Awards section, contact details below:

Student Awards looks at the completed applications and works out whether students are entitled to loans, grants or help with paying fees. Most, but not all, courses qualify for student support.  Then they pass the information on to Student Finance Direct (the body that makes the payments).

Forms for full and part time student loans and post graduate disability grants are also available on-line from the Department for Education and Skills web site:  www.dfes.gov.uk/studentsupport

Discretionary Support

Some courses are not covered by the scheme. The City Council has determined, under powers granted to it by government legislation, that it will not offer assistance in such cases.
