The newly renamed Sherwood and Haywood EIP (formerly Haywood EIP) is part of the City-wide EIP strategy and comprises the following schools: Burford Primary, Carrington Primary and Nursery, Haydn Primary, Haywood Comprehensive, Henry Whipple Primary, Northgate Primary and Nursery, Seely Infant and Nursery, Seely Junior.

The EIP provides a shared vision for staff and pupils at the partner schools, to engage partners to support Every Child Matters outcomes for our children and young people, and to sustain and develop a long term partnership, based on collaboration and support. We aim to enhance and enrich the education of all the pupils within the EIP, thus raising standards of achievement and educational attainment in its broadest sense. We aim for all our children and young people to leave us as independent learners and responsible citizens.

In addition, four particular priorities have been identified for action within the EIP. These are:-

  • To provide modern foreign languages opportunities across the family of schools.
  • To provide enrichment opportunities across the family of schools.
  • Further development opportunities for the gifted and talented children within the family of schools.
  • To engage parents in supporting their child’s learning.

Examples of projects:

  • Language Learning for Every Pupil – supported by the Primary Strategy Consultant in Languages and a Key Stage (KS) 3 & 4 Modern Foreign Languages teacher from Haywood School, staff in our Primary schools have been supported to teach Spanish (and German in Seely Infants!) to pupils in KS 1 & 2. CPD opportunities across the family, Spanish Days, international links and after school clubs mean that our primary schools should be self–sustaining in the teaching of a modern foreign language to their KS 1 and 2 pupils by September 2008.
  • Enrichment Activities – EIP and Extended Schools funding of these activities has off-set the cost to parents, opening access to them for many more pupils in our partnership schools. Activities have included visits to the theatre, Snibstone Science Park, e-Learning Centre, Twycross Zoo, Science Show, Farm Parks and an outdoor adventure centre. Musical activities include SAMBA drumming, an opera singer to work one day per week with Foundation and KS1 pupils, opportunities to learn to play an instrument, Musical Futures accessed weekly by KS3 pupils at College Street . Transport to sporting events and funding of after school clubs, e.g. Mad Science, have also been included.
  • Stadia 56 - a three day activity for a group of Gifted and Talented pupils from Years 5 & 6 at our schools, who were set the brief of designing a new sport stadium for multiple use. Working in partnership with Nottingham Forest Study Support Centre, pupils have surveyed the stadium at Nottingham Forest Football Club and Derby Pride Park Football Stadium, worked with expert staff and used current industry standard design software. Six Year 10 pupils acted as peer mentors to the primary pupils, and used their media skills to film the project. The DVD was shown at a presentation event to pupils, staff and parents.
To complement Stadia 56, Architecture Workshop will be held for KS1 and Years 3 & 4 Gifted & Talented pupils to use their design and mathematical skills to build structures such as model bridges.
  • Parent-liaison Workers have been appointed in each of the partnership schools to engage parents in supporting their child’s learning. These approachable staff are successfully encouraging parents into school and even to take part in further learning themselves. Their work is closely linked to the City’s Parenting Strategy and the Extended Schools agenda.
  • Development of the Extended Schools programme has been taking place since April 2007. Our Extended Schools Cluster is well on the way to offering the full core Extended Schools offer.
  • SEAL Coordinators have been funded to attend joint training. Provision has been made to enable individual schools to steer their own development. For instance two schools procured June Gourlay, SEAL Consultant, to lead INSET. A twilight session is planned for late summer to evaluate the progress this year and share good practice.
