Nottingham City Childcare Sufficiency Assessment

Nottingham City Childcare Sufficiency Assessment

Introduction

The Childcare Act 2006 introduced a duty on all local authorities to produce a Childcare Sufficiency Assessment for their area from April 1st 2008.  The assessment looks at the demand for, and supply of, childcare in Nottingham. By comparing supply and demand the local authority can identify gaps in childcare provision and formulate strategies to close the gaps. The assessment looks six main areas;

  • Geographical gaps in childcare – areas in Nottingham with less childcare than other areas.
  • Income gaps -  the cost of childcare compared to parents and carers income and/or affordability.
  • Specific needs gaps – the availability of childcare for disabled children or children with special needs.
  • Time gaps – the times childcare is needed compared to the opening times of providers.
  • Age gaps – the number of places for children of different age groups compared to the number of places available.
  • Type gaps – the type of childcare available compared to parents and carers  needs

The format of the Childcare Sufficiency Assessment is governed by statutory guidance which sets out the specific areas of research. A copy of the guidance can be downloaded by clicking here.
