The Environmental Information Regulations 2004
The Environmental Information Regulations 2004 allow members of the public to access environmental information held by public authorities.
What counts as Environmental Information?
Under the Regulations, environmental information includes information relating to
- The state of air, water, soil and land
- Wetlands, coastal and marine areas
- Noise, radiation, waste, emissions
- Environmental policies, legislation, and plans
- Contamination of the food chain, including Food Safety inspections
- Cultural sites and built structures
- Reports on the implementation of environmental legislation
- Planning

Making a request
Requests may be made by telephone, by fax, in person, in writing, or by email, and must include your name and return address.
Exceptions
Some information may not be available to the public, however there are fewer exceptions from our duty to disclose than under the Freedom of Information Act 2000. All of these exceptions are subject to a Public Interest Test which is applied by Information Governance. This is a test of whether the public interest in releasing the information is outweighed by the public interest in maintaining the exception.
