The Electoral register

What is the Register of Electors?

The Register of Electors is a list of all the people who are eligible to vote. A revised register is compiled annually between August and November and the information gathered is published each year on the 1st December. The register is updated on the first working day of each month from January to September.

What is the difference between the full and edited register?

There are two versions of the Register of Electors – the full register and the edited register.

The full version has all the names and addresses of those people who have registered and it has restricted access and can only be used for specific purposes, such as electoral purposes, law enforcement and credit referencing.

The edited register, however, is on general sale and can be used for any purpose.

Whilst your details must be included on the full register, you do not have to be included on the edited register if you do not wish to. When you register just tick the box to say you wish to opt out of the edited version and your details will not be listed.

Who has access to the register?

The full register is available for public inspection at the Elections Office in the Guildhall, Burton Street between 8:30am – 4:50pm Monday to Friday. The full version is also used by credit companies for credit checks and by other agencies for law enforcement. Please note: We can not confirm details from the register by telephone or via email. A member of the public can only inspect the register in person under supervision.

The edited register is available for anybody to purchase for any purpose.

Where can I inspect a copy of the register?

The full register is available for public inspection at the Electoral Services Office in the Guildhall, Burton Street between 8:30am – 4:50pm Monday to Friday. It is not necessary to make an appointment to view the register. It is illegal to take copies of the register but it is allowed to make handwritten notes.

The Electoral Services Office also keeps copies of all the full registers published for Nottingham City since 1976. These are also available for public inspection. Copies of full registers preceding 1976 can be found at:-
