The Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Nottingham - Councillor Gul Nawaz Khan
Gul Nawaz was born on 2nd April 1945 in India, where he spent his first 21 years before moving to England in 1966 to study. Unfortunately, due to his father’s sudden death in 1967, he had to leave his studies and return home to Kashmir, Pakistan.
He returned to Nottingham, but due to the change in his circumstances he had to find full time employment and joined Nottingham City Transport until 1969, when he returned to Kashmir.
Whilst in Kashmir in 1971 Gul Nawaz married his wife, Ismat Parveen Khan, but due to red tape he was forced to return to the UK alone. However, he missed his wife so much that he personally contacted the British High Commissioner and was able to gain her Visa to travel to England, so in 1973 they both returned to the UK and began living in Sneinton, Nottingham.
Now settled into family life Gul Nawaz began working for the National Coal Board at Gedling Colliery, where he worked for 20 years, whilst here he was an active Trade Unionist, with the National Union of Mineworkers.
Gul Nawaz has been an active member of the Labour Party since 1977, during that time working as a volunteer with the Pakistan Friends League. He was elected Councillor of Dales Ward in 2003 and has served on various committees, such as Licensing, Housing, Planning, City Centre Working Group and the 3P’s Partnership.
He and his wife have six children, 3 sons and 3 daughters, all of whom have graduated from University, having studied Accountancy, Law and Teaching. Gul Nawaz has always believed that a good solid education can open many doors and is now a mature student himself, having gained an A level in English & Sociology this year with hopes of eventually attending University. Gul Nawaz is also a School Governor at Greenwood Junior School.
Gul Nawaz also has 6 grandchildren and still lives with his family in Sneinton, Nottingham.
