People gathered in their thousands for the official opening on May 22nd 1929, on what has been described as a perfect day, and was performed by the late Duke of Windsor, then Prince of Wales. The Duke opened the great doors with a gold key which is still displayed on a wall plaque just inside the building, to the left of the grand staircase.
