Applying for a certificate of birth, marriage or death

When application is made for a certificate it is necessary to give the approximate, if not precise, date and place of the birth, marriage or death and the full forename(s) and surname(s) of the person(s) to whom the required certificate relates. In the case of applications for birth certificates the full names of the parents of the person concerned and the maiden surname of the mother should also be given if known.

Application for a certificate can either be made by personal attendance at the office during the Monday to Friday hours or by post, enclosing a cheque or postal order for the relevant amount made payable to "Superintendent Registrar" and a stamped addressed envelope.  Applications received in person will be available for collection after 11.30 am the next working day, or they will be posted first-class to you. Applications received by post will be answered within 12 working days.

Telephone applications can be taken if you have a debit or credit card - see contact details below.

Unfortunately the Registration Service does not have sufficient staff to undertake searches of an indefinite or protracted nature. If such a search is required it is necessary for you or your agent in person to either make a general search of the indexes held at the office or to search the national indexes held at various locations.

General searches of the indexes at Nottingham Register Office

The indexes held at the office relate only to births, marriages and deaths which have occurred within the City of Nottingham.

A "General Search" is a search of the indexes held at Nottingham Register Office conducted in person by you or someone on your behalf, for up to six successive hours. A prior appointment must be made and a fee is payable.(View details of fees) Access is only to the indexes and not to the registers themselves. A certificate of any entry identified can then be purchased on completion of an application form and on payment of the appropriate fee.
