Nottinghamshire Coroner’s Service
The
HM Coroner for Nottinghamshire is Dr Nigel Dennis Chapman - BSC HONS, MB ChB HONS, Distinction
in Surgery. D(obst) RCOG, MRC GP, CERT.AV MED, FFFLM, Associate Professor - Nottingham University and
Visiting Fellow - Derby University.
Dr Chapman qualified in 1974 in Leeds
and went into General Practice in 1976. He was in General Practice for 17 years, being the senior partner
for 13 years. During this time, Nigel studied law and trained to be a Coroner. He was appointed Coroner
for Lincoln in 1992. This was a part time jurisdiction. In July 1993, Dr Chapman was appointed full
time Coroner for Nottinghamshire.
Whilst
in General Practice, Dr Chapman worked in many forms of occupational health in industry and as Fire
Brigade Medical Officer for Lincolnshire Fire Brigade, a post he has held for over 20 years.
He
was part of the Joint Services Initiative, which was set up and trained post-traumatic stress counsellors. This service received a prestigious international award for its pioneer work in debriefing after traumatic
incidents.
In 1992, he left General Practice and worked as a Medical Officer
in a Hospice, where he received specialist training in bereavement counselling.
Dr
Chapman gives talks and lectures to many groups, from the Medical/Legal Profession to Women's Institute
and Church Groups. He usually gives one lecture per week on average.
