Useful information to help in completing funding applications

Whenever you are thinking about applying for funding from Nottingham City Council or any other funder, there are a few golden rules to follow.

  • Firstly, have you read the criteria thoroughly? You must ensure that your project of activity matches the funder's aims and that you’re eligible to apply. If it doesn’t, you’re probably wasting time that could be spent in applying to the right funder. If you’re not sure, give them a call first, most funders would prefer a quick conversation to give you some advice rather than having to reject your application.
  • Have you clearly explained what it is you want to do and how much it's going to cost? Telling a funder about the general work of your organisation or past projects might be useful, but does it actually tell them what you want the money for and what you’re going to do with it?
  • How do you know there is a need for your project? Is your activity an idea that you have thought of, or have other people in your community suggested it? Has your group spoken to local people to ask whether your activity is something they would be interested in or enjoy? If you have, make sure you tell the funder about this informal consultation as well as any surveys or open meetings you might have held to discuss ideas.
  • How will your project or activity make life better for people in Nottingham? What difference will your project create in your community? Think about how you will show this change has happened. All funders will ask you to monitor your grant to tell them how you have spent their money and whether your project has been successful.
  • Finally, make sure you keep a copy of your application. Some funders (including the City Council) might contact you to clarify a few things or to ask you a few questions. This is not about trying to catch you out but the funder trying to ensure they know exactly what it is you want to do. Having a copy of the application makes it much easier for you to answer their queries.

Some funding application forms will ask you for information about the people your project is likely to benefit. To help you with this, Nottingham City Council has produced some maps and information about the people who live in Nottingham.
