Harare

Harare

The link between Nottingham and Harare was established in 1981 when Nottingham’s then Chief Executive acted as Elections Officer in the Independence Elections of 1980. Originally a technical link, this has now developed into an educational link through the ‘linking lives’ project co-ordinated by Mundi, Nottingham’s Centre for Global Education. The project aims to promote awareness and understanding of global citizenship in Nottingham and Harare through school linking.

Harare is the capital of Zimbabwe; a modern city of shops, hotels and office blocks, spacious boulevards and parks, surrounded by residential areas. It is the centre of the country’s industry and commerce.

The name 'Harare' comes from 'Harava', the Shona people who, at the end of the 19th Century, occupied the Kopje - the hill southwest of the centre of Harare which offers a uniquely picturesque view of the city and surrounding countryside.
