Indian Community Centre

A new £2.5m Indian community centre has opened in Nottingham with support from the European Regional Development Fund.

Based in the old Thomas Forman printing works in Hucknall Road, Carrington, it will offer bigger and better facilities.

Resham Aujla has been overseeing the project. "We have fitted the new building out to a very modern standard," he said.

"It's about two-and-a-half times bigger than the old centre and will offer a lot more to the community."

£250,000 of the £2.5m cost has come from Nottingham City Council, £372,000 from the European Regional Development Fund, £100,000 from regeneration group the Neighbourhood Development Company and £50,000 from the Clothworkers' Foundation in London. The rest was collected from the community centre's own resources and donations.

Mr Aujla said the centre would continue to offer services like day care, a luncheon club, cultural activities, after school club, visa and welfare advice.

The community centre association also plans to provide a health and fitness suite, a dance study centre, social club for the members and a resource centre.
