There has been an independent cinema on the Broad Street site since 1966, but the last decade or so has seen the building change almost beyond recognition. The new organisation, Broadway, was born out of a consortium of local media organisations, backed by the British Film Institute, East Midlands Arts, Nottingham City Council and Notts County Council. The nineties witnessed a £2.8 million refurbishment of the existing facilities, a figure which included £500,000 from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
The phase completed in 1997 gave the frontage a dramatic new look with a four floor glass section linking Broadway with its old administration block next door.
2005-6 saw another major development and building expansion that created the region’s largest independent media centre to date and one of the largest in the UK. The construction work took a year to complete and expanded the facilities to include 4 cinema screens, an education suite, and production, exhibition and training facilities for film and digital media. The project, has enabled Broadway to provide increased workspace and business incubation services to support people starting their own small media enterprises.
Over £1 million came from the European Regional Development Fund with additional support from the Arts Council Lottery programme, East Midlands Development Agency and Greater Nottingham Partnership.
The independent cinema on Broad Street, which not only screens films but hosts a wide variety of events that include specialist screenings, celebrity guests, author readings and debates, education classes and digital events was originally the first regional film theatre in the UK. This significant expansion directly reflects the growing demand for creative space and activities in Nottingham and the funding received will enable Broadway to help consolidate the centre as the city’s creative focal point.
