If you are breeding dogs for sale, where during any twelve month period five or more litters are born to his/her bitch or bitches, a licence is required by the local authority under the Breeding of Dogs Act 1973 and the Breeding of Dogs (Welfare) Act 1999. The number of litters a bitch is allowed to have in her lifetime is restricted to six. In addition, no more than one litter may be born in any twelve month period to anyone bitch and bitches may not be mated if they are under one year old.
