The School Organisation Committee is a statutory body, set up by, but independent of, the Local Authority.

The Membership of the Committee includes five groups appointed by the Local Authority which include:-

• Representatives from the Local Authority – Elected Councillor Members;
• Nominees from the Church of England;
• Nominees from the Catholic Church;
• Nominees from the Learning and Skills Council; and
• Nominees for the School Group(School Governor representatives from the Primary/Secondary and Special sector schools).

Role of the Committee

Proposals for the closure and/or opening of schools within the city boundary must be considered and approved by the Committee where objections to the proposal have been received.  

As with all other statutory proposals considered by the Committee, failure to reach a unanimous decision leads to a referral to the Schools Adjudicator.  

In determining any proposal the options open to the Committee are to:-

1. Reject the proposals;
2. Approve the proposals;
3. Approve the proposals with modifications; or
4. Approve the proposals subject to conditions.
