The Civil Contingencies Act and Nottingham City Council

Under the Civil Contingencies Act, Nottingham City Council as a Local Authority, along with the Emergency Services, NHS Bodies and the Environment Agency, is a Category 1 responder.

As a Category 1 responder Nottingham City Council has the following duties placed upon it:

  • Assess local risks and use this to inform emergency planning
  • Put in place emergency plans
  • Put in place Business Continuity Management arrangements
  • Put in place arrangements to make information available to the public about civil protection matters and maintain arrangements to warn, inform and advise the public in the event of an emergency
  • Share information with other local responders to enhance co-ordination
  • Co-operate with other local responders to enhance co-ordination and efficiency
  • Provide advice and assistance to businesses and voluntary organisations about business continuity management

A lot of this work was already being undertaken by Nottingham City Council; the Civil Contingencies Act simply gives a national framework for us to work within.

Further information on the Civil Contingencies Act, a Short Guide to the Civil Contingencies Act and Guidance on the Civil Contingencies Act can be found on the UK Resilience web site.

As a Category 1 responder we now have to think bigger,
expect the unexpected, plan, prepare, train and exercise for it.
