Please note:

From the beginning of May essential maintenance work will be taking place on the Nottingham Castle's drive way.

Access to the Castle will be limited for people with mobility impairments until the end of June.

We would ask you to bear with us whilst this essential work is carried out and promise to do our very best to facilitate entry whenever we can.

The progress of this substantial maintenance project will be detailed on this website - please visit regularly for up to date information on access.

The work, which has required substantial investment from Nottingham City Council, will result in the Castle's foundations being more secure, and on completion, the sites usual high standards of public access will return.

Nottingham Castle

Welcome to Nottingham Castle - a magnificent 17th century ducal mansion built on the site of the original Medieval Castle, with spectacular views across the city. A vibrant museum and art gallery housing collections of silver, glass, armour and paintings, plus fifteen centuries of Nottingham history. The galleries also bring the best regional, national and international artist's work to the city.Nottingham Castle is 10 minutes walk from Nottingham City centre, with easy access from train and bus stations. Parking is close by.  

     

The Castle is a great place for children, with interactive displays,and an activity - led gallery bringing paintings to life, specifically for the under 5s plus a medieval - style playground in the grounds with covered picnic area.

NB: The Children's Gallery is currently closed for refurbishment but will open again on 15th March with the exciting Beyond the Sea children's exhibition.

Castle Cave Tours

Underneath the Castle are many manmade caves and tunnels, some of which date back to medieval times.Visitors can take a guided tour to see Mortimer’s Hole, King David’s dungeon and the old wine cellar.The tour is strenuous and includes steep steps.Many visitors choose to descend through hundreds of years of history, learning on the way gruesome tales about Roger Mortimer and King David of Scotland.

Monday -Saturday 11am, 2pm, 3pm;(subject to availability).

Sunday (summer months only) 12pm, 1pm, 2pm 3pm; (subject to availability)

£2.50 adults, £1.50 concessions/children (in addition to normal admission fee).

The Castle is now home to the city’s Decorative Art and Fine Art collections, along with the “Story of Nottingham” galleries, which tell historical tales of fifteen centuries of Nottingham life. Temporary exhibition areas host a changing programme of visual arts displays that vary from internationally-renowned exhibitions, to small showcases for local developing artists.The Castle is also home to the Sherwood Foresters Regimental Museum - a small but informative museum charting the history of the local regiment.

The Castle grounds attract a large number of visitors each year, not only providing a place for quiet reflection but also hosting a number of events including historical re-enactments, the Outdoor Theatre season and the Robin Hood Pageant.  The planted grounds are also an important part of Nottingham's entry into the Britain in Bloom competition.
