Information about the Abbey and Grounds
A beautiful historic house set in a glorious landscape of gardens and parkland within the heart of Nottinghamshire. Founded as a monastic house in the late 12th century, Newstead became the seat of the Byron family in 1540 and was home to the poet Lord Byron.
Inside the Abbey there are medieval cloisters, Victorian room settings and the private apartments of the poet Byron. There is also a library plus a fascinating collection of paintings and furniture throughout. For children (and adults), there are replicas of Lord Byron’s favourite clothes to try on in the interactive display ‘Dress to Impress: Being Byron’.
The gardens and parkland at Newstead Abbey cover more than 300 acres with paths that meander past lakes, ponds and waterfalls. The gardens have something to offer in all seasons, with spectacular displays of colour from the rhododendrons in late spring to the Japanese maples in autumn. Visit the Rose Garden, The Fern Garden, Rockery, Sub-Tropical Garden, Spanish Garden and Japanese Garden. The parklands include a variety of habitats important to nature conservation, including nationally significant heathland currently being managed by a flock of Hebridean sheep as well as an extensive collection of tree species.
The formal gardens are the perfect place for a stroll, a real escape from the hectic pace of city life.
The Abbey is the ancestral home of the Poet Lord Byron who lived at Newstead from 1808 – 1814. There is much to explore including the poet’s private apartments as well as his letters, objects and furniture, including the table at which he wrote his poetry.
The abbey was originally founded as a monastic house in the late twelfth century and there is still much to explore of its medieval history including the medieval cloisters and the West Front of the priory church.

The West Front of the priory church is an internationally recognised icon and was recently featured in the second series of BBC Restoration. Although Newstead did not win the series, the campaign to restore the West Front has not dwindled, and we still hope to raise enough money in the coming months to restore the exquisite carvings and features of this outstanding piece of architecture.
There are many events held at Newstead for all the family and the facilities have recently been upgraded to include a new courtyard café and contemporary conference and banqueting facilities. for Corporate and Private Hire
Newstead is also available as a wedding venue – what better setting to have your photographs taken!
