Home Care

The Home Care Service is part of the Council’s Adult Services, Housing and Health department and provides care to adults. The Council’s in-house teams provide care to approximately 500 households across the City and in addition, purchase care from approved Independent Home Care Providers for another 1500 households. We provide support to people in their homes, assisting with personal care and practical tasks associated with daily living. We work closely with Health colleagues, Voluntary Agencies and Independent Care Providers to enable people to remain within their own homes, families and communities. Our care is person centred and we work with people to promote their independence rather than encouraging dependency.

What is personal care?

This is an important part of the care we provide but people can often be confused as to what it means. The care you require will be based on an assessment of your needs and so the care you receive may vary but this is what we mean by personal care:

  • Assistance to enable you to get out of bed, wash, go to the toilet and dress.
  • Ensuring you have a hot meal, keep warm and helping you to get ready for bed at night.

We aim to enable people to continue living independently at home so we may also assist you when you are: Homecare image

  • shopping
  • washing
  • preparing meals
  • hygienic cleaning your kitchen and bathroom

There are some jobs we do not ask care assistants to do. These include professional nursing duties, decorating, household repairs, etc. If you need help with these tasks, we can refer you to organisations that will perform such duties. These include:

  • Age Concern
  • P.A.D.S (Preventative Adaptation Scheme)
  • Fire Safety Department

How we deliver care

We have three specialist teams that provide care to people: Intake, Dementia (JackDawe) and the Nottingham Emergency Home Care Service (N.E.H.C.S). Our teams are made up of Home Care Workers (HCW’s) and Senior Home Care Workers (SHCW’s) and are supported and supervised by Home Care Managers. The majority of our employees are NVQ qualified and have received training on promoting independence, assisted movement, assessing risks in the home and in the provision of personal care. We have over 320 employees dedicated to providing the very best support enabling people to remain in their own homes.

We also contract care provision to approved Independent Care Providers, that are continuously monitored and assessed by our Quality Monitoring Team to ensure the care we all provide meets the required standards.

"I don’t know how we managed without the support of the Home Care Team"

the care was excellent in every way and fully appreciated…”

These are just two of the comments that our customers have made about the service we have provided. For more information on how to become a Home Care Worker, contact Jonathan Allen on (0115) 9151074 or email him jonathan.allen@nottinghamcity.gov.uk.

Cost

There may be a cost for these services. The amount you could be required to pay would be determined after an assessment by our Fairer Charging Team. Details of the service and arrangements for providing it are discussed and agreed with you. We then write telling you what we are going to provide and how much you will pay. You may not be charged at all but if you do, it will only be to a maximum limit. The following applies for home care services in 2006/07: -

  • Charges will only be payable by those people whose assessed ‘Total Chargeable Income is sufficient to contribute towards the costs of Home Care services received.
  • One hour of Home Care will cost £7.15. If you do need to contribute for the service this will be up to a maximum charge of £55.00 per week, regardless of how many hours Home Care you receive.
  • Service users with capital (excluding their place of residence) in excess of £21,000, or who have declined to have an assessment will pay up to the maximum charge of £55.00 per week for the Home Care received.

This charge does not change if you need more than one carer at a time. For more information, including examples of what you may pay as a service user, click on Fairer Charging Team.
