Balancing
the need to travel with the aim of improving quality of life is an important objective underlying the
Councils transport strategy. Travel Plans sets out steps to encourage people to commute to work and travel to school by sharing cars,
public transport, on foot, by bike or using other sustainable methods. Nottingham was the local authority
to adopt travel plans in 1995 and since then have learnt many lessons on encouraging the take up of
them and sustaining them.
Travel plans forms an integral part of what the Government
terms “Smarter choices” which also includes improved public travel information, personalised journey
plans, teleconferencing, car clubs and travel awareness campaigns.
