Nottingham Library and Information Services also provide special services catering for prisoners at HMP Nottingham and patients at the Wells Road Centre.
In partnership with HM Prison Service, the City Library service operates a library within the confines of HMP Nottingham; the library is available to inmates, prison officers and those who work in the prison and supports reading and learning.
Library books located in the prison are listed on our library catalogue but they can only be obtained by making a specific reservation. This can be done online, or through one of our libraries.
Big Book Share in HMP Nottingham
The library runs regular Big Book Share sessions for dads. A librarian talks to the prisoners about popular children's books for all ages and helps them choose books for each of their children. They can then record a story onto CD and send to their children, along with the books, so that the children can hear their dad's voice reading the story. This project promotes reading and literacy with the prisoners and their families and helps maintain the contact with their children.
The librarian helps to coordinate the Toe-by-Toe reading scheme where prisoners can support others who are non-readers, or who cannot read very well.
