Nottm. voluntary sector worth £227mWe all know that volunteers are a force for good. Aspiren Ltd and Nottingham Community and Voluntary Service now have evidence to prove it.![]() Research released today (7 July) shows that the voluntary sector in Nottingham adds £227m to the local economy. That's equivalent to the value of 19 Nottingham Forest football clubs! Cutting funding to the sector risks harming the economy, say the researchers. The sector is not just a major part of the economy, but it is also a key part of the Big Society. 'Our research shows that voluntary groups bring significant investment to the city. But we also identified hundreds of unfunded community groups using volunteers to improve local life. It's not all about the money - these groups are making an invaluable social contribution to their communities.' says Graham Gardiner, Aspiren Ltd, who carried out the research with his colleague Toni Esberger. The research found that volunteers were working the equivalent of 649 full time jobs for Nottingham. If we paid them a wage, it would cost the city £14m. 'These volunteers are the heart and soul of our society. We urge the Government to recognise the voluntary sector's value and continue to support it.' says Jo Dean, Partnerships Manager at Nottingham CVS, who commissioned the research. The research was launched at the Broadway Cinema in the city on 7 July.
