Newstead Abbey - Adopt a stone - West Front

A chance to add your own story to the history of Newstead

You can now adopt a stone online, please click here for more information

The West Front of the priory church at Newstead Abbey is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and has been on the English Heritage Register of Buildings at Risk since 1998. Since then Nottingham City Council has appointed a conservation architect to determine what conservation and repairs will be necessary and has established a joint steering group with the East Midlands Development Agency and neighbouring district councils. Two major surveys have been carried out and the council has applied for grant aid from English Heritage to put in place immediate conservation measures including the design and erection of specialist scaffolding. But even if the bid is successful, no more than 40 per cent of the cost can be grant-aided by English Heritage.

Therefore the stones of the 13th century West Front, the only surviving part of Newstead's former priory church, are available for adoption to raise funds as part of our ongoing West Front appeal that will help rescue exquisite carvings from the ravages of time, weather erosion and water penetration and pollution.

Individuals and organisations can 'Adopt a Stone'. The scheme gives you the unique opportunity to celebrate a birth, friendship, engagement, wedding or other special anniversary or dedicate a stone to the memory of a loved one - or to make a truly Byronic gesture and adopt a stone in honour of your favourite pet, as Byron built a memorial in the grounds of the abbey to his beloved dog Boatswain.

The architectural drawing below shows the stones and is coloured according to the following categories:
  • Yellow - children under 16 - £10 (SOLD OUT)
  • White - Plain rectangular ashlar blocks - £50
  • Orange - £100
  • Green - £200
  • Turquoise & Blue - £500
  • Red - £ 1000
  • Light Blue - (Carved Tympanum and figure of Christ) - £10,000
  • Pink - (Virgin and Child) - £15,000
For a full list of the available stones and further information please call the Abbey on 01623 455900 to request an adoption form.
