Sixty pupils have successfully completed the City Council’s annual
Tap the Gap work experience scheme.
They recently attended a special
ceremony at the Council House to collect their awards, joined by over 200 people celebrating the achievements
of these young people, including Chief Constable of Nottinghamshire, Julia Hodson, Notts County footballer,
Michael Johnson, Nottingham City Council’s HR Director, Ben Browne, and Councillor Eunice Campbell.
The scheme, first established in 2001, runs each
year from July 21st with placements lasting between two and four weeks. Tap the Gap is aimed towards
high achieving Year 11 BME children and this year the scheme has extended to include children looked
after and disabled children.
All departments have
supported the initiative this year resulting in the highest number of children ever securing placements,
allowing the council to showcase the many varied and exciting career opportunities on offer.
Tayamine
Aston whose placement was based in the HR Recruitment Shared Service, said: "This
experience has given me a new perspective on the City Council and what they do. The City Council is
a good place to work and offers many great services to the general public."
Councillor
Eunice Campbell, Executive Member for Human Resources, Customer Services and Consultation said: "This
year’s Tap the Gap has been a tremendous success, involving young people from nine city schools, including
children in the care system and children with disabilities. The feedback from all participants has been
welcomed by schools as well as Council departments and will be used to make improvements to next year’s
programme."
