City Council gets tough on tax evasion

Nottingham City Council is warning people of the consequences of failing to pay their council tax.

On Monday, 28th January Gary Bogle was committed to 26 days imprisonment for non-payment of council tax. The debt was £1327.20. Mr Bogle was found guilty of culpable neglect on 23rd May 2007 and was given a 30 days suspended sentence on condition he pay £100 per month, with an initial payment of £150 in June 2007. However, Mr Bogle paid only £270 and failed to attend a hearing in December which led to a warrant for his arrest being issued and a court appearance.

The magistrate said, “Mr Bogle gave no explanation as to why he didn't pay, and why he didn't keep in touch with the City Council.” He further added: “Re-suspending the order would not produce any results.”

Nottingham City Council takes around 30 committal cases per month to the Magistrates. It is usual to receive a suspended sentence, but if the terms of the sentence are not complied with there is a real likelihood of going to prison. The council encourages people to keep in contact with them about their arrangements and is happy to discuss individual circumstances. Other support available includes help with arranging debt advice sessions.

Cllr Michael Edwards, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Holder for Resources, said: “Nottingham City Council does not tolerate tax evasion and will take action against those people who continue to do so. The people of Nottingham would expect nothing less. There are plenty of opportunities to work with the council if people are having difficulties paying.”
