Brian Clough statue unveiled

Picture of Brian Clough statueOver 4,000 people turned out to see the unveiling of the Brian Clough statue in Nottingham.

A statue of the legendary former Nottingham Forest manager is now in position near the Old Market Square ready for the unveiling by his wife Barbara.

Hundreds of well-wishers joined current and former Forest stars and other VIPs for the ceremony.

The entertainment started early with a big screen showing action and interviews from Forest’s glory days under Cloughie, from mid-morning onwards.

Before the unveiling, Mrs Clough set the scene for the memorable day by saying: “I’m really looking forward to the occasion and I am sure the same can be said of many people in and around the city.

“I know Brian would have been immensely proud that people have gone to so much trouble to pay tribute to him.”

Two of Forest’s former European Cup winners have been paying tribute to the master manager. Martin O’Neill feels that it was his personality and character which motivated the players. “You were drawn towards him and felt that playing in his team was the most important aspect of your life. He was simply sensational and the unveiling of this statue is so well merited.”

John Robertson, who scored the European Cup-winning goal in 1980, says that Cloughie was the most charismatic man he has ever met. “His mind was so sharp and he knew the game inside out. To do what he did at such clubs as Nottingham Forest and Derby County was phenomenal. With respect, I can never see it being done again.”

Paul Ellis, Chairman of the Statue Fund, commented: “I went to see the finished article at the foundry prior to its transportation to Nottingham and we all agreed it is quite breathtaking.

“I’m convinced that everyone who sees it will feel the same and all the people involved can feel extremely proud at the outcome of the project.

Nottingham City Council Leader, Councillor Jon Collins, added: “This is a fitting tribute which recognises Brian Clough’s achievements and all he did for Nottingham. It promises to be a really special occasion when the statue is unveiled on Thursday. I hope as many people as possible will come along and join in the celebrations.”

A limited edition replica of the Brian Clough Statue is now available. Only 1,000 copies of the replica will be produced. Order can be placed at www.TheMediaGroup.tv/BrianClough
