Working to reduce injuries
Nottingham City Council has taken action to reduce the number of injuries at an accident
site.
There have been 33 accidents at the junction of Nottingham
Road onto Valley Road over the last six years, three of them serious. The majority of these incidents
involved drivers using the right hand turn.
The right hand turn onto
Valley Road northbound has therefore been removed to reduce the number of accidents, ease congestion
and simplify the junction. The number of lanes has also been reduced from three to two.
Martin
Bee, Principal Engineer from Road Safety, said: “Safety is always a top priority and these experimental
changes will help to reduce injuries in this area. With the high number of accidents that have occurred
here, doing nothing would simply not be an option.”
There are several
alternative routes to Valley Road available.
Other options were considered
but were ruled out because of concerns about increased congestion. Removing the southbound turn has
been discounted because of a lack of alternative routes.
The Nottingham
City Transport number 50 bus service, which used the right turn, has been re-routed via Perry Road and
Hucknall Road.
Drivers are asked to respect the right hand turn restriction
and are reminded that the alterations are for their own safety and the safety of others. The area is
monitored routinely by transport police and a traffic observation camera.
