Improved safety at Strelley Road

Road safety improvements on Strelley Road between Helston Drive and Dewry Island will start this month following consultation with residents and businesses in the area.

Nottingham City Council carried out a public consultation exercise in the spring and asked for people’s views on their plans to improve road safety along the stretch of road following a high number of traffic accidents.

The work will start on Monday 15th September 2008 including suggestions from local residents and businesses which will include:

  • Installing a mini refuge at the Denewood Crescent junction with Strelley Road to improve motorists’ lane discipline.
  • Extending double yellow lines from the existing bus stop, which is just east of Denewood Crescent, into Denewood Crescent itself. This will give bus drivers better visibility and also increase motorists’ visibility when turning out of Denewood Crescent.
  • Implementing a disabled parking bay outside the Library close to the zebra crossing.

The improvements also being carried out will include:

  • Upgrading and installing new pedestrian crossing facilities
  • Improving the street lighting
  • Improving the road surface and road markings
  • Installing a cycle lane along this length
  • Upgrading the bus stops
  • Improving the zebra crossing at Drewry Island so that it is easier for motorists to see it at night.

The work is due to be completed by mid to late October 2008. To be able to carry out the work safely various temporary traffic restrictions will be in place including off-peak lane closures.

Cllr Jane Urquhart, Portfolio Holder for Transport and Area Working at Nottingham City Council said; “We have listened to the views of residents and businesses in the area and have planned the road safety improvements in response to these. The scheme will benefit motorists and pedestrians and will make the area more accessible for everyone.”

Nottingham City Council apologises for any inconvenience these works may cause and reassures people that they will do all they can to keep disruption to a minimum.
