showing how Nottingham
Station could
be transformed into a modern transport Hub have been revealed for the first time.
The
computer-generated artist’s impressions accompany a revised planning application by Network Rail for
the ambitious and impressive proposals for the station. The new plans address the latest requirements
of new train operator East Midlands Trains as well as heritage and planning issues. These will be considered
by the City Council’s Development Control Committee during the Summer.
The
Masterplan for Nottingham Station is a multi-million pound scheme to transform both the existing rail
station and the entire south side of the city, complementing proposals such as the expansion of Broadmarsh
and the NET system. It was commissioned by a partnership that includes the City and County Councils,
Network Rail and East Midlands Trains. Nottingham Development Enterprise, Nottingham Regeneration Ltd,
Greater Nottingham Partnership, The Railway Heritage Trust and emda are also members of the Nottingham
Railway Station Steering Group.
Examples of what will be incorporated
in the plans are shown below:

- A
brand
new concourse on Queens Road linked to a station for Nottingham Express Transit
- New taxi ranks, bus stops, cycle parking and car park
- The original
Edwardian frontage
of the station will become an attractive mini mall, while passengers will be able to wait in comfort
among shops and cafes.
Councillor Jane Urquhart,
Portfolio Holder for Transport, said:
"It’s exciting to
see more clearly than ever what our station
could look like if we take this bold, once-in-a-generation step to invest in it and make it a gateway
to the city of which we can be proud."
Managing Director for East
Midlands
Trains, Tim Shoveller said:
"As one of the key hubs to
access the East Midlands Trains network, we are committed to improving
Nottingham Station. By providing improved interchange facilities, this will encourage greater use of public transport and
at the same time will provide a much improved gateway to the City. This is a fantastic opportunity for partners to work together to complement the rail infrastructure
improvements already planned for the region."
