2008 Trip Information Surveys
Frequently
Asked Questions
Why are you carrying out surveys?
We
need to update information about trip patterns and travel behaviour in Greater Nottingham. Surveys to
capture this information will include a post paid questionnaire which will be handed out to vehicles
stopped at traffic signals or on the approaches to roundabouts, and traffic count surveys in which observed
traffic movements are recorded. The information will be used to bring the Nottingham transport computer
model up to date to extend its useful life. The model is used to evaluate major transport schemes which
have, in the past included the Turning Point scheme and NET Phase 2 and will provide supporting information
for bids to the Government for funding.
Is
every route going to be surveyed and how long will they take to complete?
It
is intended to carry out post paid questionnaire surveys at 21 locations. Routes will be grouped to
minimise opportunities for drivers to divert to adjacent routes to avoid the survey locations. The surveys,
which will be carried out through late June and early July, will cover the morning peak period (7.00am
- 10.00am), the inter-peak (11.00am - 2.00pm) and the evening peak period (4.00pm – 7.00pm). Each location
will be surveyed on one day only.
Why hand out questionnaires - couldn't you make a note
of registration numbers and contact DVLA for information?
Some information
could be collected like this, for example the address of the registered keeper, but the important data
we are seeking relates to trip origin and destinations and journey purpose. Whilst this could, theoretically
with the assistance of the DVLA, be obtained by writing to drivers individually, it would be extremely
resource intensive and, hence, expensive and unlikely to provide the quality of data required.
Will
there be any delays?
Questionnaires will
be handed out to motorists already stopped at traffic signals or approaching roundabouts so no significant
additional delays are anticipated. Should delays occur over and above normal expectations then surveys
will suspended until conditions return to normal.
How many
times will I be stopped?
The surveys are planned and designed so that
individuals should not be stopped more than once, unless you choose to alter your usual route. However,
given the complexity of some journeys, and the nature of some activities, this cannot be guaranteed.
Has
safety been considered?
Yes – a police officer will be present at
every location where post cards are handed out. As an added precaution, the Emergency Services are made
aware of all survey locations in advance of the survey dates.
