Preparing for the unexpected

Preparing Nottingham for emergenciesHow ready is Nottinghamshire to respond to a chemical, biological, radioactive or nuclear incident?

That’s the question being posed at a seminar this week, which will raise awareness among local organisations and help them to be better prepared.

The annual Public Health Emergencies seminar, organised by a sub-group of the Local Resilience Forum, takes place on Wednesday June 4th at the Council House.

The event has been organised by a group of representatives from the emergency services, City and County councils and health agencies, which all have key roles to play in responding to a public health emergency.

"It’s vitally important that we prepare for emergencies so that we can respond swiftly and effectively if the unexpected happens," said Rod Oldroyd, Chair of the Local Resilience Forum’s CBRN (chemical, biological, radioactive and nuclear) group.

"We’re pleased and encouraged by the number and range of organisations taking part in this year’s seminar. By the end of the day they will be better equipped to play their part in responding to such events.

"We hope participating organisations will be able to give ongoing support and commitment through direct engagement in emergency planning processes."

Those taking part will find out about the impact of chemical, biological, radioactive or nuclear incidents on public health, how key agencies will operate in such situations and the part they can play. They will hear speakers from the local Primary Care Trust, Police, Fire & Rescue Service, Health Protection Agency and Nottingham University.
