After
the huge success of St Ann’s Weeks of Action in March, the Respect campaign moves to Radford and the
Lenton Triangle for a dual Week of Action, beginning Monday 28th April 2008.
This
is the 16th Week of Action to take place in the City, with the emphasis on cleansing and renewal.
Among
the highlights of the week will be a special Play event for Parents & Children at the Radford Primary
School, and the launch of a campaign to stop house fires among communities in Radford.
Street
Scene workers will be followed for the first part of the week by a TV production crew who are filming
the Week of Action for an episode of a documentary series called ‘Grimebusters’, which focuses on the
efforts of everyday people who clean up the nations grime and dirt. The film crew will be out with members
of Street Scene as they tackle flytips and also the NEAT team as they clear graffiti.
The
episode is expected to be shown on ITV1 in the East Midlands region in the summer and will also be shown
on Sky TV later in the year.
Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue will also
be launching their ‘Burning Issues’ campaign during the week. The initiative focuses on fire safety
within communities whose first language is not English, and follows a ‘chip pan’ fire last year where
residents became trapped. The project aims to educate and inform on the danger of fires, especially
in areas of multi-occupancy, and give additional information to BME communities in Radford.
There
will also be additional outreach work by Phoenix Futures in the Radford area to engage with drug users
and offer them help with access to treatment and support services, this will be done along with additional
support being offered to the families of drug users.
The ongoing success
of the Weeks of Action programme is testament to the genuine collaboration between partners, agencies
and most importantly the local community in fulfilling the pledge to make ‘neighbourhoods
cleaner, greener, safer and healthier for everyone’.
Allan
Breeton, Director of Operations for Nottingham Crime and Drugs Partnership said:
"During
our consultations with local people, environmental issues have been identified as the priority for this
Week of Action. In response Street Scene will be coordinating an extensive program of activity to tackle
rubbish, litter and graffiti and establish plans that ensure that the improvements made can be sustained
into the future.
"Local people also share our
concerns regarding drug users in the area and a range of agencies will be building on recent activity
to identify and support these individuals into drug treatment services."
