Son’s behaviour puts Nottingham family’s home at risk

Respect for Nottingham

A mother is in danger of losing her Broxtowe home because of her son’s criminal and anti-social behaviour.

The house, in Lindfield Road, Broxtowe, is rented by Mrs Barbara Meller. Her son, James Meller, is currently serving a prison sentence for assault and has previous convictions for burglary, assault, theft and public disorder over several years.

The Judge at Chesterfield County Court has granted Nottingham City Council a Suspended Possession Order after the City Council in conjunction with Nottingham City Homes and Nottinghamshire Police, applied to the Court for the eviction of the family following numerous crimes committed by James Meller.

It means that if there is any further anti-social behaiour by anyone living or visiting Mrs Meller’s home, eviction will follow.

Margaret Coward, of Nottingham City Homes, said: “Mrs Meller did not adhere to her tenancy agreement because she allowed her son to live at the address and blight the lives of local residents by his behaviour, to such an extent that local residents were afraid to come forward to give evidence.”

Nottinghamshire Police Local Area Commander, Inspector Steven Payne, said: "It should be made clear that everyone has a responsibility for the behaviour of their children and if this is not taken seriously tenants could loose their home. We will continue to work closely with our partners to ensure that people are aware of the consequences of their children’s behaviour and will take every opportunity to enforce the tenancy agreement".
