Nottingham Tennis Centre has been presented with
a prestigious award by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) for its contribution to disability tennis. This award celebrates the fundamental role Nottingham City Council and Nottingham Tennis Centre has
played in the development of world class disability tennis players.
The
LTA recognised Nottingham Tennis Centre’s commitment to disability tennis through it’s organisation
of numerous wheelchair tennis camps for beginners, women and juniors and their history of hosting high
profile disability events, including the World Team Cup, British Open Wheelchair Championships (for
the past 13 years), the British Open Deaf Championships and the Learning Disability Championships.
Councillor
David Trimble, Portfolio holder for Communities, Leisure and Culture said: "We are thrilled to receive the Contribution to Disability Tennis award from the
LTA. Nottingham Tennis Centre has a long standing tradition of developing disability tennis and of hosting
national and international tournaments, so to receive formal acknowledgement of this is a great achievement."
The LTA award also comes at a time when Nottingham Tennis Centre has
been confirmed as the host venue for the 2009 Invacare World Team Cup - the International Tennis Foundation’s
flagship annual wheelchair tennis team event.
The 2009 Invacare World Team Cup will feature 32
men's and 32 women's teams from around the world, and will take place directly after the British Open
Wheelchair Championship providing Nottingham with two weeks of world class wheelchair tennis next summer.
