Nottingham Castle is appealing for information
after the site’s Union
Jack flag was stolen from the flag pole on the South Terrace last Thursday. The pulley system was damaged
during the act of theft and vandalism, which unfortunately means that no flag will fly in the grounds
for the foreseeable future.
It is an immense disappointment for the
site that holds many events which feature the ceremonial raising of a flag. Dave Green, General Manager
of Nottingham Castle said: "It’s very unfortunate and upsetting, that such a mindless
act of vandalism has taken place on our site. The flag pole on the South Terrace is a focal point for
many activities held here and very popular with tourists and local residents alike - people are proud
to see the flag high above Nottingham’s iconic building.
"If
anyone has any information on the theft we ask them to get in touch with Nottingham City Police Station.
We’re currently assessing the damage caused to establish just how much it will cost to repair and how
long it will be before the city’s landmark flies a flag once again."
The
most recent event to feature the flagpole was on Sunday 24 August, when the city celebrated the Olympic
Handover day with a relay race through the city. Nottingham Castle was the first venue in the race and
an ‘Olympic Handover flag’ was raised by the Sheriff of Nottingham, Councillor Brian Grocock and Robin
Hood. The flagpole also features prominently in the sites annual St George’s Day Celebration, where
a member of the public wins the opportunity to raise the St George flag, with the Sheriff of Nottingham.
Anyone with information on the theft is asked to
contact Nottingham City Police on 0115 948 2999 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
