The historic house of Newstead Abbey re-opened its doors
to the public a week earlier than usual this year. Visitors took advantage of the advanced opening (23rd
March) and were able to explore and experience the romantic ancestral home of the great poet Lord Byron.
A
children’s Easter Fun Day marked the re-opening, with craft activities, a quiz, face painting and
a visit from the Easter Bunny.
Members of the public who visited the Abbey
in the initial week of opening were charged the 2007 rate of
admission (prices change from April 1).
Located in the heart of Nottinghamshire,
Newstead Abbey is a stunning property, steeped in history. With its medieval cloisters, Victorian room
settings and fascinating collections of paintings and furniture there is much to see and do. Home to
Lord Byron from 1808 to 1814, today visitors are still able to view the poet’s private apartments which
hold many of his belongings, including the table at which he wrote his poetry.
The west front of the former priory church is an imposing local landmark,
which visitors are now able to ‘adopt’ a piece of via www.newsteadabbey.org.uk.
The ‘Adopt a Stone’ facility is part of the abbey’s ongoing campaign to raise funds for the conservation
of this Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Set in over 300 acres of gardens and parkland that feature lakes, ponds and
waterfalls, Newstead Abbey is a beautiful site that plays host to a number of exciting events throughout
the house open season. Highlights include Newstead Summer Stage - a series of outdoor theatre performances,
which will this year be Much Ado about Nothing (to be performed by,
The
Lord Chamberlains Men), Merry Wives of Windsor and family show Pinocchio (both
to be performed by Illyria). Also on Sunday 10 August Latin and salsa fever will take over Newstead
Abbey when the Latin Party in the Park will take place.
