First glimpse of new leisure centre

Plans for a new leisure centre in Hyson Green are on display to the public.

The new facility, on the Djanogly City Academy site on Gregory Boulevard, is part of the City Council’s ongoing Leisure Centre Transformation programme.

The proposals will see the creation of a new 25m swimming pool and fitness suite facility to replace the outdated Noel Street Leisure Centre, which will close once the new centre is open. The facilities at Noel Street don’t meet modern day standards or customer expectations. This is reflected in the fact that the facility has poor disability access and it is the City Council’s highest subsidised and least attended facility.

The Neighbourhood Development Company (NDC) has already agreed to provide £2m towards funding the new centre, which will feature a swimming pool, steam and sauna and other leisure facilities. Community use of the sports hall facilities at the Academy, which is situated close to the tram system’s Park & Ride site at The Forest, has been established and this would complement the new swimming facilities being proposed.

It’s proposed that the new facility will be completed in 2010. The design of the new pool will aim to ensure flexibility and accessibility for all sectors of the community. Initial designs have been drafted and views are being sought from users and local residents to help complete the final design proposals.

Information boards explaining the Leisure Centre Transformation programme and the new proposals will be on public display at Noel Street Leisure Centre until April 6th. Members of the public are invited to give their views on the plans.

Portfolio Holder for Communities, Leisure and Culture, Councillor David Trimble, said: "We want to replace an old centre that has inadequate facilities, with a state-of-the-art centre, and already have some funding in place to achieve this.

"I understand that some people will be sorry to see Noel Street Baths go, despite their condition, but strongly believe that a better standard of service should be provided for our existing users and to encourage more people to take part in leisure activities. We need excellent modern facilities if we are to persuade youngsters away from computer games and other inactive pastimes, and to keep coming back. We would welcome feedback from the public on these exciting plans."

NDC Head of Operations, Jovica Prastalo, said: "NDC aims to improve the lives of people living in Radford and Hyson Green. Through the new swimming pool and fitness suite we are able to give local families a further, high quality amenity to enjoy together, and the opportunity to lead healthier lives."
