There’s just over
a week to go until Nottingham Castle’s St George’s Day Celebration. The annual event in honour of England’s
Patron Saint will take place on Sunday 20 April from 11am – 4pm.
The event,
which will mark the final day of the site’s exclusive BBC Robin Hood Up Close exhibition,
will feature a packed programme of activity for all the family to enjoy.
St George himself will make an appearance that’s not to be missed. On horseback
he will lead a procession of entertainers around the grounds before proudly hoisting the English flag
high above the Castle’s south terrace.
Historical re-enactment group the Dogs
of War will be setting up camp on the Castle Green, ready to demonstrate to visitors what life was like
in medieval England.
Throughout the day a variety of dance groups will be
performing traditional English dances, including the Stone Monkey Sword Dancers who will perform the
Rapper Sword Dance weaving their two-handled ‘rapper’ swords into intricate patterns and shapes. In
addition, the Britannia Coconut Dancers will perform folk dance routines, their blackened faces reflecting
the medieval traditional of disguising themselves from evil spirits.
Music
will be provided in the afternoon by the Welbeck Estates Band and activities including dressing up and
dragon making will be available for children. Refreshments will be available on site from Castle Rock Brewery.
Nottingham
Castle’s General Manager Dave Green said: "We’re incredibly proud to host our annual St George’s

The
event promises to be a great day out for all the family and a wonderful way of celebrating St George’s
Day. Entry to the event is included with the normal Nottingham Castle admission price of £3.50 per adult,
£2 for concessions, £1.50 for children or £8 for a family ticket.
