This autumn Nottingham City Council in collaboration
with partnership
agencies are proud to present Nottingham’s Black History Season: a programme of events and activities
for all ages, including talks, exhibitions, films, courses and performances which celebrate the achievements
made since the ending of slavery.
This year the season begins with the
Sankofa Globe of Freedom exhibition at Nottingham Castle, which focuses on the experiences of the young
people who designed the Wedgwood-fired Abolition commemorative piece. The programme also features exhibitions
and events at the recently opened New Art Exchange, in Radford – Nottingham’s dedicated cultural facility
for Black contemporary arts.
The popular African-Caribbean market returns
from 24 – 25 October, in the Old Market Square, with its diverse range of traditional handmade arts
& crafts, jewellery & ceramics to textile and greeting cards. The season draws to a close with
events including the Young Black Achievers Award Ceremony, that will celebrate the achievements of Nottingham
City school children on 17 November.
Councillor Dave Trimble, Portfolio Holder
for Communities, Leisure and Culture said “Nottingham City Council is delighted to be
part of this important season of events, which we hope will encourage the city’s many communities to
celebrate black culture and what we’ve achieved.”
Black History Month
is for everyone - come along and help us to learn, remember and celebrate.
