Walk Week in Nottingham

Walk WeekNottingham people can put their best foot forward on Monday to join a day of walks across the city.

Greater Nottingham Walk Week encourages people of all ages to walk more and on Monday in Nottingham’s Old Market Square there is a launch event that includes short walks in the city centre and a tour of Nottingham’s forgotten nooks and crannies, led by Chris Slade of The Nottingham Experience.

Nottingham City Council will be offering free packs of walks in the city-centre and local parks to residents, visitors and people who work in the city centre.

East Midlands Nordic Walking and the YMCA will give Nordic Walking taster sessions and Best Foot Forward will be promoting their weekly walks across the City. A representative from the Nottingham City Health Trainers will give advice how people can adopt healthier lifestyles. Harry the Heart will be in the Old Market Square to promote health for the whole family.

The Big Wheel transport project will be publicising local cycling and walking maps, the activities of Green Weeks will be advertised and Shape Up Notts will be publicising their services. And on Walk to Work Wednesday, (May 21) employees across the City are being asked to walk into work.

All Walk Week walks and taster sessions are free.

Councillor Dave Liversidge, City Council Portfolio holder for Adult Services, Housing and Health, said: “During the launch of Walk Week on Monday there will be 15 minute, 20 minute and half hour walks around the city, and as fifteen minutes of walking is half the recommended daily activity, even a short walk can bring great health benefits.

The walks start from the Old Market Square at 10.30am (15 minute walk), 11.30am (20 minute walk) and 12 noon (Nottingham Nooks and Crannies Tour lasting 1½ hours).

Nottingham Walk Week began in 2006 and is organised by a team of partners including Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottingham City Council, Nottingham University Hospitals, Catherine Hughes (Nordic walking instructor and personal trainer), Primary Care Trusts, Get Moving Nottingham, Shape Up Notts, Nottingham Trent University, Broxtowe Borough Council and the Big Wheel.
