Nottingham drive to recruit volunteers
More volunteer drivers are needed by Nottingham City Council to help transport people
around the city.
Drivers using their own cars carry out vital
and valuable work by picking up people referred by social workers on regular journeys each week. This
could be transporting a child in care to a meeting with family members or adults with special needs
to day and respite care centres.
In return, drivers get their expenses
and on-going training and support.
Nottingham City Council’s Volunteer
Drivers team has a stall in the Victoria Centre on Monday, June 4, the start of National Volunteering
Week, to recruit new drivers. Volunteers need to have at least two years driving experience, own
their own car, and have the desire and patience to help people. All volunteers will be subject to a
Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check.
Lynn Hooton, Nottingham City Council’s
Volunteer Drivers’ Support Officer, said: “Volunteer driving can be positive and rewarding for
people who have a little spare time and want to get involved in helping others. Reliable drivers are
needed to transport people of all ages and from all communities. Some of our drivers give 20 hours
a month, others are able to give 20 hours a week. It is up to individual volunteers to decide
what commitment they can offer, but whatever it is, there is training, help and support for them when
they start and throughout their time with the scheme.”
Anyone
interested in becoming a volunteer driver can visit the stall near the fish tank in the Victoria Centre
on Monday, June 4 or can telephone Nottingham City Council on 0115 915 7121 (24 answerphone)or
by e mail to vol.drivers@nottinghamcity.gov.uk for more information.
