Major operation to sweep up waste cheats

A joint operation in Bulwell to crackdown on rogue motorists saw 54 vehicles stopped in one day.

The operation was run in partnership with Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire Police, HMRC (Her Majesties Revenue and Customs), VOSA (Vehicle Inspectorate Authority), Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), Taxi Licensing, Trading Standards, Magistrates Court Warrant Officers and Housing Benefits Enforcement Officers

Police outriders targeted likely offenders who fly tip, are not registered waste carriers, do not have road tax, are using red diesel or have unroadworthy vehicles on roads in the surrounding areas. Vehicles were then escorted back for checks to be carried out by the different agencies.

Out of 54 vehicles that were stopped there was 1 arrest (for driving whilst disqualified); 1 Police prosecution for driving without a licence; 5 vehicles seized for no/or invalid insurance; 3 fixed penalty notices served by Police for not wearing seat belts; 1 prosecution for carrying waste without a valid licence (already prosecuted earlier this year); 4 waste carrier investigations (notices served to produce documentation); 3 advice letters and application packs given regarding carrying waste; 3 VOSA prohibitions served for dangerous vehicle (1 delayed); 9 VOSA VDRS served (vehicle defect rectification notices, 14 days to rectify fault); 3 producer notices for documents regarding Taxi license and 1 Taxi VDF for no fire extinguisher or first aid kit.

Cllr Katrina Bull, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Climate Change at Nottingham City Council said: “The intention of the operation is to prevent and detect crime, disrupt criminal activities and to seize vehicles to deny criminals the use of roads. This has been the sixth operation this year and we are pleased with the results and hope this kind of activity deters any rogue motorists which continue to flout the law.”
