Nottingham Register Office has announced plans to expand its service for registering
births and deaths.
From today (January 28th), there will be a full
time registrar based at Queens Medical Centre Campus and the City Hospital Campus. Staff will work in partnership with the bereavement centres and labour suites to register births and
deaths at both hospitals.
New parents can walk down
the corridor to register their baby while their partner is visiting them, or before they go home. Bereaved relatives can register deaths while they are finalising their arrangements.
In cases where mothers are discharged home early
and unable to register their child before leaving hospital, a pilot scheme to set up a Registrar of
Births in Aspley and Broxtowe Sure Start Centres is planned. These will run in conjunction with the mother and baby clinics the centres hold and will be a drop in
arrangement. If the pilot is successful it is hoped to run the scheme at other centres across Nottingham.
The
new arrangements will make registering a birth or death a simple process, avoiding unnecessary journeys
or re-living a distressing experience.
Lucy Lee, Superintendent Registrar
said: "This is an exciting new development and gives us the opportunity to improve the service,
taking into account the needs of the community we serve. We want our customers to have a positive experience and be satisfied our staff did everything possible
to help."
