City Council plans re-build of Southwark Primary School

Southwark primary re-buildSouthwark Primary School in Old Basford could be rebuilt with £6.5 million funding awarded to Nottingham City Council.

The Victorian primary school in Old Basford could be renewed as part of the Government’s Primary Capital Programme pilot. Nottingham was selected by the Department of Children Schools and Families for the pilot project to develop proposals to rebuild a school which will be a beacon for primary education in the 21st Century.

The proposal is currently in draft and is subject to further consultation before final proposals are made to the Government at the end of July.

Southwark Primary School currently operates across two sites from buildings which are generally in a poor state of repair and do not allow the most effective delivery of the curriculum. A new school would utilise the latest building design and ICT capabilities to provide the very best opportunities for teaching and learning. If approved, the new school could be ready for September 2009.

Councillor Graham Chapman, Nottingham City Council Portfolio holder for Chidlren’s Services, said: "Nottingham is fortunate to have been given additional funding from the Government, which is an acknowledgement of how well it is doing on its Building Schools for the Future Scheme.

"The rebuild of Southwark has been on the cards for a number of years and I’m delighted that the bonus from the Government gives us the opportunity to provide a new school.  We are hoping it will be the first of many more to come over the next few years."
