Nottingham represent region in contemporary theatre performance

Young people living in Nottingham will be taking to the stage to perform ‘NOMADICÂ’ - a visually stunning piece of contemporary theatre, circus and film - on the 8th and 9th July 2008 at the Sandfield Theatre, the culmination of a project to help develop skills in creative arts and theatre.

Creative Room’s NOMADICÂ project represents the East Midlands in the Young People Participatory Theatre pilot programme (YPPT), a national Arts Council England initiative aiming to develop and inspire new and exciting approaches to youth theatre.

Young people who live in the city and who are involved with Creative Room - the arts provision for Nottingham City Council’s Youth Service – have created this unique performance by working alongside professional artists, directors and circus artists.

The performance explores themes of home, displacement, sense of belonging, migration, travel and language. The ‘NOMADICÂ’ project has been funded by Nottingham City Council and Arts Council England and has involved more than 75 young people since the project began in October 2007. Many of the young people involved are refugees, asylum seekers or recent migrants with this being their first experience of theatre, circus and performing.

Councillor David Mellen, Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Children’s Services, said: "What’s really special about this project is the way it has brought together young people from different countries that all have different cultural experiences and things to contribute. It has been a great success in engaging young people in the arts, many of whom would not normally have had the chance to learn theatre and performing skills.

"This is another great example of how there are a range of activities and projects that young people in our city can get involved with."

After the performance, the young people will present the project to international theatre professionals and directors at the ‘GET IN…!’ international theatre forum event, which takes place between 25 – 27 July in Liverpool, European Capital of Culture 2008.

It is a free performance so pre booking is essential to reserve a space. Contact Creative Room on 0115 9159542 or email creative.room@nottinghamcity.gov.uk to book tickets.
