Nottingham remains top of the shops in the region
after new rankings
show it is 6th in the UK for shoppers’ spending.
The 2008 CACI rankings
reveal that Nottingham has increased annual spend by £150m to £1.4bn. The city has overtaken Liverpool,
where retail spending fell by £30m. Regional neighbours Leicester and Derby are in 24th and 38th positions
in the league tables.
Portfolio Holder for Economic
Development Councillor Brian Parbutt said:
"This is excellent
news for Nottingham, demonstrating our continued strength as the premier East Midlands regional shopping
destination and positioning the city deservedly within the top handful of UK shopping destinations.
"With
new retailers such as Vivienne Westwood and other developments on the horizon, the signs are good for
Nottingham’s shopping prospects."
City centre manager Jane Dykes
added:
"Nottingham has performed well in a very competitive
marketplace, with all the UK centres competing for consumer spend, which is especially impressive given
the credit crunch and reduced spend beginning to impact on other destinations, which have seen a decline.
Nottingham has grown its market share over the last year and quite clearly this is on the back of a
very sound offer appealing to the city’s shopping customer base."
