Nottingham's Science Sector
BioCity Nottingham is hosting the UK’s second Bio-Entrepreneur School, which will run from 26th to 28th
February 2008 in Nottingham.
Organisations including Nottingham City
Council, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) are sponsoring the programme
to further boost Nottingham’s Science City status and show commitment to the sector.
Bioscientists
and Biotechnology developers are being invited to apply for the 30 fully-funded places, funded by the
East Midlands Development Agency (emda) through the Greater Nottingham Partnership.
Anyone
interested in applying should visit www.bioentrepreneur.co.uk. Selection will begin from 13th December
2007.
The Bio-Entrepreneur School is a three-day, intensive programme
designed to help delegates explore their entrepreneurial potential, develop essential enterprise skills
and overcome confidence barriers to starting in business in this very specialist sector.
This
event further demonstrates Nottingham’s pro-active approach to growing its Science & Technology
sector, capitalizing on the Science City status designated by Government in 2005, along with 6 other
cities in England. The status acknowledges a rich history of Nottingham science - from the invention
of ibuprofen and the MRI scan, to the home it has provided to Boots and two of the country’s leading
research universities - and anticipates an equally rich future.
Simon
Green, Director of Sustainable Development at Nottingham City Council, said: “We are delighted to be
supporting an event to promote and stimulate the growth of the Biosciences industry, where Nottingham
has a particular strength. By supporting the entrepreneurs, i.e. the people that make it happen, we
feel we can add value to the growth of this industry in Nottingham and beyond. Nottingham is regarded
as one of the UK's 'Science Cities' and is pro-actively working to support a sector which is key to
the economy and local jobs, both now and in the future".
