Library Services for People with Visual Impairments

We have a wide range of services available to make using the library as easy as possible and to help you make the most of your library membership.

Books and Other Media

  • Large print books available by a wide selection of authors (all libraries)
  • Stories on CD (and some cassettes) 
  • Language CDs (and some cassettes) to help learn a foreign language learning

Listening Chain

Would you like to discover new audio books or share titles you have enjoyed? Join our group which meets on the second Wednesday of the month at Nottingham Central Library. We are now using the RNIB Talking Book Service to supply our talking books so they can be delivered straight to your home free of charge.  To find out more contact Nicola Holmes on 0115 876 1948 or e-mail nicola.holmes@nottinghamcity.gov.uk

Penfriends

The RNIB Penfriend is now available to use with our talking books on CD at the following libraries: Bulwell Riverside Library, Sherwood Library, Nottingham Central Library and Wollaton Library. Penfriends allow you to listen to audio-labels of talking books, providing a brief summary of the title to help you make your choice more easily. Please ask staff for a Penfriend.

Portland College Access Centre have contributed to this project and volunteers have helped to record the information from each talking book.

Concessions

People with visual impairment do not pay overdue charges.

Adaptive Technology

In large Community libraries and Nottingham Central Library we have computers with large screens, tracker ball mice and large print keyboards. 

Nottingham Central Library (Floor 3) also has a CCTV to enable enlargement of your own papers and library materials. Please ask for help to use this machine on 0115 915 2811 or e-mail arts.library@nottinghamcity.gov.uk

Home Library Service

Are you unable to get to a library? Our Home Library Service can bring you books and audio books to your home.

Local Information

Are you interested in old newspapers or tracing your family tree? In the Local Studies Library at Nottingham Central Library there are microfilm and microfiche machines to enlarge the resources to help you. Contact us on 0115 915 2873 or e-mail local_studies.library@nottinghamcity.gov.uk

The Picture the Past is a web site where you can find photographs of the local area which will enlarge for easy viewing.

Nottinghamshire Voices is a collection of oral history memories and local books on tape. Information is available at all libraries.
